Corporate Tax in the UAE: What Your Business Needs to Know
5 min read
The UAE introduced federal Corporate Tax on business profits starting from financial years beginning on or after 1 June 2023. For most SMEs, this was the first time they'd dealt with a profit-based federal tax at all, so a lot of the early confusion is understandable.
Who needs to register
Registration is required for UAE companies and other business entities conducting commercial activity, regardless of whether they end up owing any tax. Free zone entities are included, though many qualify for a preferential rate on qualifying income if specific conditions are met. This is an area worth getting proper advice on, since the qualification criteria are detailed.
How the tax is structured
Corporate Tax applies to taxable income above a set threshold, with income below that threshold taxed at 0% and income above it taxed at the standard rate. Your taxable income is based on your accounting profit, adjusted for specific items the tax law treats differently, which is one of the reasons clean, consistent bookkeeping throughout the year matters more now than it used to.
What filing looks like
Businesses file one Corporate Tax return per financial year, generally within nine months of the end of that financial year. Getting there requires finalised financial statements, the tax adjustments applied to accounting profit, and supporting schedules. That's much easier to prepare when your books have been reconciled monthly rather than assembled retroactively in the final weeks before the deadline.
Practical next steps
If you haven't yet registered, that's the first step regardless of your expected tax position. After that, the priority is making sure your accounting records can actually produce the adjustments a Corporate Tax return requires. Free zone qualification, related-party transactions, and allowable deductions all need to be tracked as they happen, not reconstructed later.
We help businesses register, prepare their return, and set up bookkeeping that makes Corporate Tax season a formality rather than a scramble.
